Scolding Review: The Jetsons Movie

But is there rap? BECAUSE THERE HAS TO BE!

Who doesn't like the Jetsons? Lots of people. Let's face it, the Jetsons will always play second fiddle to the Flinstones. Where the Stone age family gets a duration record that wouldn't be broken in decades, two live action movies, and recent talk of a new, Seth MacFarleyized reboot, The Jetsons has merely a string of TV movies, a  development-hell movie that would star Will Ferrel, if it existed, and the odd videogame here or there.  There will never be a time where they won't be the  Rival Schools to the Flinstones' Street fighter, the Antz to their  A Bug's Life, the Neo Geo Pocket to their Gameboy.

Haha, stupid! In the future nobody's gonna do sports!

So, I don't know what's not appealing enough for these characters that they can't even shill cereal and vitamins(even though the first is done fairly effective by a dazed looking bear and anemia, respectively.). I was fairly young when this was on reruns, and I don't remember much of it, except for it stubbornly not being about neither Robocop nor Ninja Turtles. With those 2 strikes against it, let's look at the Jetsons movie, and rediscover what the future looked like in the 50's when remembered by the early 90s.

As our story begins, as in the series we get a good look, and sung fanfare at, most members of the family. There's George Jetson, who dislikes going to work in the morning but does so. His wife Jane who is  a woman. It doesn't bring in any other traits for her than that. His son Elroy, who is  a kid prodigy of sorts, and also has A GAME that he would be SAD if his FATHER didn't get to it(not to skip ahead, but every time a movie presents a kid who has a game and wants his father to watch, it is for the purposes of him not showing up and getting the lesson that he needs to be more involved in his children''s life). And finally Judy, who is  a teenager girl, in the most broad, stereotypical form. There's Astro, the dog, combining the least endearing traits of Dino and Scooby Doo. There's also the Robot maid, Rosie. Sigh. I have never met someone who has a maid, so I'm going to assume everyone in America Circa 1950's had one. Rosie raises the building itself to get the family out of the smog, a quick set up for the themes of the movie and a reminder that everything needs to be postmodernist.

Middle Name Chopped. Last name Liver.

So George leaves this cardboard cutouts and heads for work in his Float-Car. But a traffic jam occurs, in complete defiance to the concepts that would make a flying car practical. In order to resolve this common man trouble with some ingenue he inflates a cop-shaped baloon, and makes siren sounds to convince everyone to make way. However a real cop comes along, and reprimands him.

While he's at work, his boss, MR Spacely, is holding a chairholder's meeting. Basically, the board pressures Spacely to reduce costs, Spacely points out his offplanet factory/mine  could do it, and all it needs is someone to run it,  and that the last 2  people to apply for the job ran away. Meanwhile, Elroy, who never evar convinces me his voice is a child's, is schooling some chumps in Spaceketball(okay, it's called Spaceball, but my version is more accurate.) and Judy and her friend, Bizarro Space Daria, are a at a teen kids music place(I assume she's skipping school.) when the coolest most handsome space singer there, Cosmic Cosmo, invites her for a date, set for a few days in the future.

But then they get some mood whiplash when George saunters into the home announcing he's now the vice president and they're moving. Elroy is now no longer sad his dad missed his game, and Judy is throwing a fit all over the place. This is played for laughs, but later we're gonna get a horrible song out of it.
Get over it. I moved like 7 times as a kid, and I turned out fine, for a man that argues with cartoons.
So the family moves and we get a few weak gags out of it. There's a zany family of green Wookies that they have as neighbors, and there's also also a family of robots.  I get a feeling both of these were meant to be black and we all know in the future-50's-90's there's no blacks. Seriously, I didn't see any.

The female of the robot family invites the women to a mall, which brings Judy out of her marasm. Meanwhile, George goes to work, because this is what men do. Men can't be bothered to go to their kid's games or loiter in malls all day, like women.

However, soon George learns that the plant is not all fun and games. There's also some ill(advised) early 90s rap about how the factory works. It's painful but quick, like being stabbed in the eye by a Kenyan.

Judy separates and heads off to the "nature zone" of the mall, so we can get her super sad ballad about being heartbroken. Look, I don't remember The Jetsons having any songs, and if it did, they probably weren't this terrible. Eventually she stumbles upon a new boy to love, who looks like the bastard son of Captain Planet and Two-Face.
So...dreamy?
And Elroy is now getting schooled by his kid neighbor robot AT Spaceball. See, I told you. Black. Eventually all this set up leads to George Jetson ceremonially starting the factory, which immediately starts going bonkers and shooting sprockets around. Elroy who has been building animosity towards his neightbot, saves him, even though, well he's a robot. How much can he be hurt by a piece of metal?

With the pressure on him to somehow make the factory work,  George is ever more determined to get results. but somehow the plant keeps failing. Eventually George's coworker fesses up and reveals that the plant is probably being sabotaged. George decides that the best course of action would be letting the higher ups know so they can  launch a full assessment and investigation. Or wait at work while it's dark with a flashlight, like a jackass.

His kid, the Sasquatch kid, and the Robot Kid also launch their own investigation, worrying the parents of 2 of those kids because Space Sasquatches are terrible at parenting. Eventually George goes missing, and the kids stumble into the darkest truth, that the saboteurs are...CUTE LIL'  SPACE MONCHICHEES!
If it's smart enough to accessorize, it's smart enough to be tried for sabotage.

Indeed, under the factory, right next to the ore mining drill, live this happy go lucky, highly marketable  space babies, who are having their home destroyed by the BIG BAD CORPORATION! As intelligent beings capable of speech their only hope of survival has been to ecoterrorize  the factory! And to make sure we get the point that the monchichees are in the right, the hairy sasquatch baby hug-shields the monchichi from Astro. I think that moment gave me diabetes.
I have since learned that you don't get Diabetes strictly from eating too much sugar. I hope that makes the fact I got it from this funnier.
Then George Jetson comes out of the woods, tied and gagged. It's clear the furballs, much like their direct inspiration the Ewoks, meant to kill and eat George, as they probably did to the people he's substituting. But he's still the asshole who's supposed to understanding, and he's still the one who has to compromise with the Space Monchichees according to everyone, including Captain Planet looking dude.

To even further drive who the assholes here are, Mr Spacely arrives, and tries to start the machine. The robot worker insists that he don't  without ever pointing out specifically that he's probably killing  a few people. Spacely kills the robot, and  goes on with the drilling, sending deadly rock debris flying at the Jetsons and putting them all in perilous risk.

Eventually  Jetson and his family get out, and try to stop  the machine, which his boss does not allow. Now, I think the roughly 5 people involved could take on Spacely, since he's like 3'5, has  like 50+ years, and wields no weapons. But because that would be too direct, George jumps  into a hole where a series of gags occur, and busts the machine.

Forced  by this space mutiny, Spaceley is strong armed into a deal were the Monchichi's do all of the work for nothing(because destroying the environment bad, sweatshops good?), the factory is exclusively are recycling plant, and  I guess all the Sprockets go on be part of Bono's hype machine. However, the family must return to Earth, and leave behind all their new friends. With tears in their eyes, they travel on. Awful 90's rap aaaaand scene!

So uh, that sure was some movie, huh? Never even nearly as clever and funny as it thinks, The Jetsons movie is abrasively progressive with it's politics while having some pretty retrograde characterization. The characters are a little too dull, and don't have consistent motivations, or in the case of Jane Jetson just plain have no motivation at all. The animations is mostly so-so, and the songs...are fucking terrible.  So what can I say? It's kind of subaverage at best. So perfect for the Jetsons, I guess.

The Ridiculous Remake-Reboot-Adaptation-Sequel betting Pool

It's a whole new year, and with it, sure to come are a whole series of new films based on old shit.  But what else are we going to do with all our loose

Colin Farrels? And so, I have decided to skip to the chase and call out the movies that will destroy our childhoods, as soon as they're being announced and

done and stuff. This are the movies I believe we'll be reading about this year. As such, it is necessary that we give each category of bad idea it's own

section. Here goes nothing.

Live Action-CG abomination based on cartoon.

After the perfectly putrid test footage for Hong Kong Phooey, I realized something: studios just don't care for funny animal universes inhabited by humans.

Hong Kong Phooey HAS to be a toilet water drinking dog, as has to Underdog. What's my bet? I've two.

Pinky and the Brain

Pinky and the Brain is going to be announced this year. However, by the time it's on screens it'll be more about a guy that has to learn a lesson from these megalomaniac mice. WB did everything it could to bury the franchise forever, but perhaps it's time to drag the proverbial corpse out of it's proverbial grave  and humiliate it some more. Taking the name and designs, yet utterly ignoring the show's original attitude and heart.

Also Secret Squirrel.

Secret Squirrel is one of those franchises that was never important enought to bring out but to the most all inclusive company wide events. Essentially

Inspector Gadget, but a squirrel and with a racially offensive sidekick, Secret squirrel is needed to come back by no one. So expect this one in 3D soon.

Perfectly fine stand alone film redone

Gritted up Children's story.

Well, we're all children on the inside? So gimme a story for kids, but make it really morbid for me and my graying beard.

The Christmas Toy

A fairly obscure movie that may or may not have inspired Toy story, the movie followed on the premise of sentient living toys with a catch: if humans saw them, they died. So obviously it was already gritty. That's why they'll remake it extra gritty, with the toys hatching  a plan to blind all the humans in the house with a laser.

Old dormant franchise given a sequel

Sometimes a decade just doesn't feel like a decade. When a film franchise spends  more than a decade out of theaters, the idea of directly continuing it is

almost always a bad one. But this is the year when they announce:

Lethal Weapon 5

Lethal Weapon both belongs to a genre that's not on vogue (buddy cop stories) and has a cast member who's not allowed into big movies anymore on account of being a terrible person. It's also on double digits since the last movie came out. This is the year when the sequel is announced. Or should I say prequel?

Lethal Weapon 0: The Early Years starring Donald Glover and Sam Witwer!

Readapted, this time less bad:
Yo, last time we tried to make a movie about this, it turns out we ruined everything. Let's only ruin most of it now.

Tomb Raider

While I think it's kind of cheating, since this is one of those thing's that gets mentioned every once in a while, this is the year when it goes somewhere.

And since Hunger Games "proved" that you can make a movie with a woman lead and it might sell(you know, if it doesn't suck and the marketing isn't bad and it's got a strong word of mouth for the source material. Like every other movie, stupid executives.) it's just as well that Tomb Raider might finally get out of Dev-Hell.

Wait, what the hell?

Ha! Your hubris will be your undoing! Just when you think I can't get any more dumb ideas, I'll announce:

Sailor Moon: The Movie

With maybe even an Asian or two in there! It IS a team, after all. And they'll need plenty of bad guys to fight.

The Arnold Schawrzennegger "dragging out an old man to pretend he's an action star again" award

I'm not too old for this kids! Watch me reactivate an old franchise and shame myself!

"Escape From" series.

Kurt Russel hasn't been seen in a while in anything big. So let's drag him, almost 30 years older than he was, put him in a tank top and an eye patch and a mullet, and pretend he doesn't  start gasping for air if he talks too loud. See where it gets ya.

Announced, yet unlikely to exist:

Oh, this movies totally for sure gonna come out soon. I was just talking to Roberto Zemeckis's and he's totally letting me do it.

Justice League

Just kidding(except for the emoticons)

E.T. 2

Spieldberg will finally be ready to free himself from  2 decade's worth of writers block and finally get on with that sequel to E.T. he's always wanted to do. The answers to your questions are CG, In 3D and  May 15, 20NO.

What are your guesses? Let's come back her enext year and compare notes.

...And the horse you rode in....

It was inevitable...

Working in the irony mines isn't all fun and games. There's a lot of stuff that just passes you by. Like I WANTED to watch Heroes,  but I never got around to it. I'm sort of a general geek, but I never got around to getting into Harry Potter, or Fringe, or Battlestar. And I can't blame it on poorness. I COULD just stream it.

Yet there is one show that came so highly recommended, I  had to overcome a lifelong bias against the franchise.

You see, I'm not a stranger to girly things. I used to watch Skydancers all the time. And I always pick female characters in fighting games. I have fanart of Wordgirl, for fuck's sake. But I just can't get into this "My Little Pony" Business.

See, when  I was young, my Mom  bought me and my Brother  each a one of them ponies. They weren't nearly as stylized as they are now, though. But my father, worried about this stunting our development, took them away.
I think mine was blue, though...

I went on to do many "gay" things I'm saving for their own  series, and grew secure enough on my manliness to wear a T-Shirt with Mandy on it to work. No dice on the ponies though. That franchise was tainted for me.
I'm available, ladies...

But, more than that, I don't need to prove anything. If you guys are recommending me a show with ponies on it, it needs to be more than just good. It needs to knock my fuckin' socks off.  Just because Rob Bricken and Chris Sims like it doesn't mean I have to like it.

So I finally caved in, and watched the first ten  adventures of Twilight Sparkles, Fluttershy, Applejack, Rarity, Rainbow Dash and the Retard* in the hopes of finding out what the fuzz was about.

And you know what, fuck you guys for being so insecure. It's just an average show!  The pastel artwork is nice, the voices  are good, Cree Summer is good, the writting is good. It's just a decent show for girls that's sort of tolerable for boys. Is that all? And here I thought you guys where adopting nicknames and  stuff for something that's actually really great. Like, they barely fight at all!

How pathetic do you guys get? Lording over us that you like  a sorta-good show that happens to be geared towards girls? Why don't you tell people you like something you really shouldn't like, like "A Serbian Film" or "Johnny Test"? Hey, you guys, I like Fefe Dobson! Woooooooo!

So that's it. I am not a bronie, or Brawnie or whatever. I'm not gonna be doing any fanart for this one. I'm just gonna finish all the current episodes, for research. And then go back to stuff where people shoot lasers from their eyes and missiles from their forearms.

*I'm sorry, Pinkie Pie. I know you're actually misunderstood.  I love you. Not as much as Applejack, though. And Cree Summer doesn't voice you so... Wha...Hey, buddy, article's over!

Scolding Review- Wolverine and the X-Men

I turned it off.

I have not seen an X-Men cartoon since the 90s one ended. As much as I like the X-Men, none of these series felt like stuff I needed to watch Evolution looked a little to young and hip, even though I was young and hip when it was on. Last week, I decided to give Wolverine and the X-Men a chance.

I turned it off.

I felt weird about this show. I've never been a big Wolvie fan. I mean, I get why people like him. I just don't naturally gravitate toward characters like that. And I knew his increasing dominance in X-Men lore wasn't just here, on the title of this cartoon. Still, can't hurt to try it.

I turned it off.

Something about Sentinels got foreshadowed. It won't be important. A scene took place on the Xavier institute.  Wolverine is leaving. An uneasy feeling took over me. Why is this completely in character action so important?

I turned it off.

Everyone's fawning over Wolverine. Jean Grey, blows a kiss to him, in front of Cyclops, her boyfriend. So it's not even subtext anywhere?

I turned it off.

Blood was pumping in my veins. Was this anger? Should I have expected something else from a title that sounds like a Wolverine  rock band? He approached Rogue.

I turned it off.
 I turned it off.
Rogue is very sad that Wolverine is leaving.

I turned it off.
I turned it off.

I turned it off.
Rogue tells Wolverine something to the effect that the X-Men are not the X-Men without Wolverine. Thoughts. Blind Anger. No. Fury. Is this? What else? DO I want to..?

And then I turned it off.

I knew this cartoon was gonna suck Wolverine's Mutant peen, much like you knew I was gonna say at some point I turned off the cartoon. But to already start the cartoon with people acting like Wolverine is godsent what's he gonna grow into?

Fuck this cartoon and it's abnormal character development and Wolverine  idolatry. Fuck it! If they can't be bothered to at least show why I should care about Wolverine, then I guess I won't bother with watching the rest of this.

Good old innapropriate toys

When I was young, like, under 10, I was in love with a movie called Robocop. It worked on me on the level a movie about a cop who is also a robot works for a kid. Back then, I didn't know what cocaine was, what a hooker was, or that movies they showed on TV where translated. Upon reviewing it as an older boy, the satire of culture, and the harrowing violence became more apparent(and appealing) to me. But as a kid, I could walk into my school's candy shop and purchase this...
Drop it! And then beg your  parents to buy more!

...without any sense of irony or mockery I bought a plastic Robocop Torso that contained candy inside. The candy was the same stupid candy that people make  bracelets out of. That is to say, you'd as soon put it on your sweaty neck than in your gullet. But it didn't matter. It was endorsed by fucking Robocop!

What's more, if you wrestled his helmet out of him he had an unpainted Alex Murphy face in there.  But you ruined the back of the head, though.

I got into several sci fi classic films as a kid, such as Predator or the Fly. One I never got into was Alien. It was probably on the channels that I didn't get. In fact, my earliest memories of Aliens are these two guys.

Drop it! And later find it under the couch next to some cat shit.
"Angus Beef" they call it...

Jump, Jump

Bishop(with fall into easy to lose appendages) and the Bull Alien. Now, I've yet to see Alien 3...but was there an actual Bull Alien?

Come to think of it, the 90s hadsome pretty nasty aliens to sell to kids. And none where nastier than the Mars Attack Aliens. Sure, ID4 aliens blew up the White House, but the Martians snuck into it, pretended to befriend the president, then impaled him with a novelty hand.

Still, they where aliens, so I'm sure even though the movie wan't quite child-friendly, you could hav eaction figures for the Tim Burton old Scifi homage, right?
You know, guys, I don't think you SAW the movie, y'know?

Or you could make them more monster-like, and also nothing like the movie.  This guy spent the last decade cluttering up my house, having lost his cape-jacket and shoulder-pads and became a bulky reminder that not all toys are accurate to the movies.

None of that for me. I like my action figures as close to the source as possible. Except for the one...

Only a true ninja can pull off the "one piece bathing suit made out of cheetahs from Bizarro World look."

April O'Neil, Ninja Newscaster! Known by me as Ninja April. For reasons that are really confusing to me, I developed an unhealthy  crush  on this lady. I took her everywhere, and took offense when a fellow action figure enthusiast suggested we should simulate her defiling. The taking her everywhere part ended up being her undoing, as a trip to the beach proved to be the end of our doomed romance.

 The end?

Good old innapropriate toys

When I was young, like, under 10, I was in love with a movie called Robocop. It worked on me on the level a movie about a cop who is also a robot works for a kid. Back then, I didn't know what cocaine was, what a hooker was, or that movies they showed on TV where translated. Upon reviewing it as an older boy, the satire of culture, and the harrowing violence became more apparent(and appealing) to me. But as a kid, I could walk into my school's candy shop and purchase this...

4 other celebs that need their own cartoon.

Word has come up the planned animated opus known as "the Governator" is cancelled.

It is sadness all around. Mainly because it showed us our own mortality.  Our biggest action star of the 80s and 90s is a terrible decision maker and the creator of Spider-man can't even get a decent Jackie Chan Adventures-type deal going on before his brain farts out a bunch of uninspired crap with robots. The Dream is Dead!

Off course, it's not the first time  celebrities have tried have stepped into cartoon lands. Mr T did it. Chuck Norris did it.  Even Damon Wayans had one! He's not even the best Wayans!
It's K.I. He writes bad movies as traps for his siblings.

But, you know, Governator was freaking stupid. It's a generic cartoon starring Ahnuld Jokes. Really old Ahnuld Jokes. Here, I made a chart.

Now they're just trying to come up with new stuff and failin. "Sperminator?" How about some "True Lies" jokes! How about "Conan the Marriage Destroyer?" How about "End of Days(In which I hide my secret illegitimate children).
As for Old Man Stan Lee, he's been trying to make celebs into  Superheros for years, and each one has been more embarassing than the last. I guess this is only sad depending on which level of credit you are willing to give Stan Lee. For those of you looking for evidence this man is not the reason you like Spider-Man, then  haven't you given Striperella, or the Backstreet Boys stuff or the threat of that Paris Hilton thing too much control over your life?

So here's a list of celebrities that Stan Lee should get to make "Superheros" from next.

Winona Ryder
TAKE IT TAKE IT TAKE IT!
Pitch: "So Stan, you know how it is to have once been well regarded and now being relegated to cameos. Do it to Winona, but in animation. Put your penis back in your pants. Security!"
Synopsis:Winona Ryder is an actress by day, but by night she becomes the cat burglar known as "The Night Ryder!(C)". The Night Ryder must find aliens hidden on earth as expensive articles she probably could have bought during the day.

Then again, drugs often make options where none existed...
Charlie Sheen
Pitch: Say, 3 months and a half ago I read several jokes about cocaine addled, attempted murderer Charlie Sheen's drug fueled musings. I assume this will still be funny in the year this project will take to develop.
Synopsis: In a world ruled by darkness, only one man can stop evil. A rocks star from the planet mars, he has been imbued with Tiger CAN I PLEASE KILL MYSELF NOW?
Tupac Shakur
Stuff is always less offensive when a dead guy writes it.
Pitch:You know, I think Tupac Shakur's name has only grown into legend ever since he got shot. I can only assume we can make money out of this somehow.
Synopsis: Everyone thinks Tupac died when he was fatally shot dead. His spirit lives on...as the Cosmic MC! Whenever black people are in danger, The Cosmic MC is there. He will defend the West Coast...OF THE UNIVERSE!

Sarah Palin

Kaw KAAAAAAW
Pitch: Have you ever seen this many drugs, Stan? I must have gone into 10 comas, hahahaha!  Still, we aren't paid in drugs to DO drugs. Let's see what the job is! Er...crap. I will be needing 1 more of everything...
Synopsis: Sarah Palin is a respected, apt stateswoman. There's one problem, though...the woman running for president right now is NOT Sarah Palin. The real Sarah Palin has been kidnapped by aliens and abandoned in a frozen prison planet, a clone put in her place to completely botch her chances at winning at any branch of goverment. The real Sarah Palin will use her survivalist skill, political savvy, and no nonsense attitude to rally a rebellion against her oppressors and save the earth in "Palin's Planet!"
